My Big Problem – I hate to cook.

Old stove hoodIt is hard to raise 3 boys, who like to eat, when you don’t like to cook.

I never really learned to cook, so I am not very comfortable in the kitchen.  I am not good at it, it stresses me out.  So I avoid it.

I have to feed these boys, they are always hungry and that hunger seems to grow the older they get.

So what do I feed my boys?

  • Frozen things from Costco – like lasagna and orange chicken.
  • Canned foods – Spaghetti O’s, though Harry hates to eat things like this and Jax is starting not to like it either.
  • Sandwiches
  • Chicken Nuggets

Luke was saying the other day:

We can cook things in the toaster, the microwave and that thing under the microwave.

He doesn’t even know what an oven is!

Harry is always saying I don’t feed him enough.  He is always hungry.  Those 13 year olds ARE hungry.  He eats all day long.

Ugghh.  I really feel like this is the one way I suck as a mom.  (I have other things I am not great at, but I don’t suck at them.)

Any tips?  What do you feed your families?

  1. Hi, thanks for stopping by my blog! You don’t suck as a mom for not cooking- you should have been at my house the first year we were married! 🙂 Even though i had worked as a short order breakfast/lunch cook for a couple of years and as a dish pit girl for even more years, I didn’t really know anything about making a full meal beyond eggs and sandwiches. My husband can wolf down quite a bit of food, and I really only knew how to boil pasta and open up jars of sauce. So, we ate a lot of pasta. Slowly but surely, with a lot of mess ups and failed dinners eventually resorting to bowls of cereal, I tried one easy recipe at a time. If I found one that I didn’t kill, I’d use it again. After 2.5 years of this, I think I can manage basic cooking. Every once in a while I get adventurous and try something fancy, but it’s all trial and error. You could always try a little cooking at a time, but keep all that frozen stuff on hand in case you have a failed meal liek I so often did! 🙂
